Το Εφορευτικό Συμβούλιο της Δημόσιας Κεντρικής Ιστορικής Βιβλιοθήκης Χίου «Κοραής» στα πλαίσια του προγράμματος περιπατητικών διαδρομών σε μονοπάτια της παράδοσης, της Ιστορίας και του πολιτισμού, σαν γνώση, φιλοσοφία και τρόπο ζωής στα πλαίσια δημιουργικής διεξόδου για όλους μας, μα κύρια τους νέους, σας   προσκαλεί στην πεζοπορική ιστορική περιήγηση, που θα γίνει την Κυριακή 6 Απριλίου 2014, με την καθοδήγησητου Γιώργου Χαλάτση, στα Μεταλλεία Κεράμου.

Πρόκειται για μία κυκλική ιστορική διαδρομή διάρκειας περίπου 2,5 ωρών γύρω από το χωριό του Κεράμου. Θα περπατήσουμε σε ερημικούς αγροτικούς δρόμους και στα ξεχασμένα μονοπάτια των μεταλλωρύχων μέσα σε υπέροχο πευκόδασος. Η διαδρομή, μήκους περίπου 5 χλμ, περνάει από το έρημο σήμερα χωριό του Λαρδάτου με το μισογκρεμισμένα πετρόχτιστα σπίτια, την παλιά βρύση του χωριού μέσα στη ρεματιά και φυσικά από αρκετές στοές. Παράλληλα θα γίνει ιστορική αναδρομή από τον Πρόεδρο της Βιβλιοθήκης Χρίστο Μπελλέ, που αφορά στο θέμα των μεταλλείων αντιμονίου της περιοχής, που στιγμάτισε τραγικά την κοινωνικοοικονομική ζωή του τόπου. Δίνεται η ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουμε και να αγγίξουμε την Τοπική Ιστορία, τις πηγές της, καθώς και τις φυσικές ομορφιές του τόπου μας.

Για τον καλύτερο σχεδιασμό και συντονισμό της δράσης, απαιτείται η γνωστοποίηση από τους ενδιαφερόμενους του τρόπου μετακίνησής τους. Εκκίνηση με λεωφορεία από τη Βιβλιοθήκη στις   8:30 π.μ. (τιμή εισιτηρίου 4 ευρώ). Μετά την πεζοπορία, θα υπάρχει χρόνος για φαγητό – για όσους το επιθυμούν – σε ταβέρνες της περιοχής. Στοιχειώδης απαιτούμενος εξοπλισμός: παπούτσια πεζοπορίας, σακίδιο πλάτης, νερό.

     Η Δημόσια Κεντρική Ιστορική Βιβλιοθήκη Χίου «Κοραής» πραγματοποιεί εορταστική εκδήλωση-αφιέρωμα στις Άγιες Ημέρες, το Σάββατο 12 Απριλίου στις 20.00 στην αίθουσα του αναγνωστηρίου της.

     Στην εκδήλωση θα παρευρεθεί ο Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Χίου, Ψαρών και Οινουσσών κ. Μάρκος, ο οποίος θα πραγματοποιήσει ομιλία με θέμα «Η Ανάστασις του Χριστού στην εκκλησιαστική γραμματεία και τη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία».

     Το «Διονυσίειο» Μουσικό Σχολείο Χίου συμμετέχει με απάνθισμα βυζαντινών ύμνων, υπό τη διεύθυνση του καθηγητή βυζαντινής και παραδοσιακής μουσικής Μάρκου Λίναρη. Μαθητές της Β’ Γυμνασίου και Β’ Λυκείου θα ψάλλουν τους ακόλουθους ύμνους:

ΑVΕΚΤ

In 1990, Koraes Library launched the process of cataloguing electronically all its books. Electronic cataloguing was made possible thanks to the AVEKT software, a programme created by the National Documentation Centre. In addition to the electronic catalogue, the library maintains the traditional handwritten registration book, which is currently used to search and locate old material. Newer acquisitions, and more specifically material acquired after 1990, have been keyed in electronically without going through the old-fashion registration book. In addition to cataloguing newer acquisitions by using the AVEKT software, the library’s personnel trained into using this programme started working on cataloguing books and periodicals prior to 1990. To date, the cataloguing team registers book collections that date as far back as the 1940’ and were mainly published during the 19th and the 20th century.   

The 5.6 version of the AVEKT software is currently used in our library. It provides users with enhanced research and retrieval features. User can locate material by title, authorship, heading, subject matter and keyword. This is a simple level search. At the intermediate and advanced level search, technologically savvy users can combine more than one search parameters as well as individual words. If the book or other material belongs to the Koraes Library, it means that it cannot be borrowed. However, researchers can read the books and study the material in situ, in other words at the library’s reading room. Only the material kept at the circulation desk/lending department can be borrowed.

Digitalized material
Digitalization of the library’s material is a vital part of the overall process aiming at preserving the library’s treasures. The material that has been digitalized or is in the process of being digitalized is the following:

• Local papers, and most specifically Paghiaki and Nea Chios. 
  
• Amaltheia and Smyrni, two Greek newspapers published in Smyrna (1871). 
  
•  A series of literary journals and other journals and periodicals such as: Vios (Smyrna 1878), Apothiki (Smyrna 1839), Eptalofos (Istanbul 1862), Nea Apothiki (Smyrna 1860), Imerologion tis Anatolis (Istanbul 1878), Parnassos (Smyrna 1894), H Filologia (Smyrna 1841), Chiaka Chronika (1911, 1914, 1917, 1919, 1923).    
  
• Selected books (editions published between the 16th and the 19th century) chosen based on two major criteria, namely their relevance to the island of Chios and the historical period to which they refer and the users interest in accessing this material. 
  
• Books belonging to Adamantios Koraes collection as well as all publications on and about   Koraes (from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century).

Digitalization was made possible thanks to a high-tech scanning and digital imaging machine that is a property of the Koraes Library.

Philip Argenti folklore collection comprises items that fall into four different categories: embroidery, woven fabrics, costumes and woodcarving utensils

The first category is made of costume accessories, such as breast kerchiefs, headscarves and cuffs as well as other ornaments and decorations used around the house, such as çevre, towels and white embroidery. These items cover a period which extends between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

The woven fabric collection consists mainly of sample items which date back to 1936. They include belts decorated with various ornaments (called “ploumia” in Kalamoti and Pyrgi) or stripes (called as such in Mesta). They used to decorate the hem of a woman’s skirt and were placed in stripes, as shown in the sample. A variation of this decorative method consisted in using bits and pieces of woven fabrics to decorate the house. Currently, woven fabrics can only by found in Mastihohoria.

As far as the costumes are concerned, it worth mentioning that there are very few areas in Greece where a limited geographical area, especially an island, presents an endless variety of local costumes. This phenomenon can also be found in Florina and the surrounding villages.

Finally the woodcarving item collection comprises mainly utensils used by shepherds. They were found in the Northern part of the island, also known as Voreiohora, and depict the main occupation of the people of this region, which consisted in livestock farming.

The main topic of the paintings found in this room refers to traditional costumes from Chios. The collection covers a considerable period of time, i.e. between the 16th and the 20th century. Visitors can see different variations of the same costumes, depending on the location (villages and groups of villages, namely Kampohora, or the villages of the plane of Chios, and Voreiohora, or the villages in the North of Chios) and on the time frame, in other words across the centuries.

 
Some of the oldest paintings in this collection were created by explorers who visited the island of Chios. Our newest paintings (20th century) were drawn based on the descriptions given by the locals. These data were compiled by Philip Argenti and were used to produce these paintings.

In the room, there are three cases which hold three porcelain models (figures dressed in local costumes that were already represented in paintings). These models, made in London by D. Court, were ordered in by Philip Argenti. When the models arrived on the island of Chios, Argenti ordered that their moulds be destroyed to ensure the models will remain unique.

This room hosts paintings and portraits of some of Chios’ most prominent families. Most of these portraits are as old as the persons they depict.

These portraits showcase Jenny Skylitsi (1853), Alexandra Mavrokordatou-Skylitsi (1872), Ambrosios Argenti, son of Leonis Argenti (1861), Viera Argenti (1861), Julia Ralli-Argenti (1890), Maria-Julia Argenti (1877) and Pantelys Argenti (1879). There is also a marble bust of Marouko Argenti and bronze busts of Philip P. Argenti and his children (namely Phany, Georgina, Pantelys).

The visitor can discover an interesting case containing medals, coins and small plates, which belonged to the Argenti family. Among the coins, there are rare commemorative issuances dedicated to some of Venice’s dignitaries (Dons): These rare coins narrate the Dons’ exploits against the pirates near Chios (1646-1647), the occupation of Chios and its archipelago and the naval battle of Ceşme (1770). In a second case, there are some of Philip Argenti’s personal items, such as a sword of the Diplomatic corps, a lace originating from Belgium used for children’s christening (1815), miniatures in porcelain frames and an ivory bound Bible.     

Finally, the collection comprises miniatures and two ivory busts of the Argenti family, a marble bust of Maria-Julia Argenti (1876) and a bronze bust of Mihalis Mavrokordatos.
